Introducing: The Creators For Climate Podcast

Welcome to the Creators For Climate podcast. Just like you, we are looking for answers about our role in this changing world. Despite our background in science and communication, we have more questions than answers. So in this show we’re going to sit down and talk shop with a wide range of guests — Creators, scientists, experts, organisations — all people at the forefront in the fight against the climate crisis. Each episode we’ll give you a virtual seat at our table so you can listen in on these interesting climate conversations.

Meet the new Co-Host

This season's kick off features Charlie, my curious and passionate co-host, who gives us a glimpse into the environmental filmmaking world.

Charlie has a unique background in journalism, documentary filmmaking and environmental storytelling, and uses his skills to highlight critical issues through his own project: Curious Earthlings. Together, we'll be exploring how storytelling can drive impactful change.

*We'll also follow along on Charlie's journey of releasing his project "Curious Earthlings". See it as an extra accountability buddy!

The Role of Filmmaking

One key takeaway from our conversation was how witnessing climate change firsthand reshaped Charlie's perspective. Initially, he thought the solution was straightforward: "more renewable energy and technological innovations will definitely get us in the right direction".

However, through experience, like filming his "Turtle Beach" documentary in Mexico, he realised there are much more complex, interconnected issues at hand, that simple local technological fixes can't address. He saw how climate change affected everything from sea turtle migration patterns to local ecosystems, pushing him to think more holistically about solutions.

Which brings us to the role of us filmmakers and content creators. By putting himself in challenging environments, charlie's able to capture the reality of climate impacts — which, he argues —cannot be fully conveyed through traditional media alone. His firsthand experiences, whether in the jungles of Peru or the local fields of Denton, Texas, have taught him that good climate communication requires both emotional and intellectual engagement. But... how?

Insights for Aspiring Creators

Get Involved Locally:

Start with local issues. They often mirror global problems, and tackling them can create real impact. Charlie's work in Denton, Texas, fighting against a housing development that threatens local ecosystems, highlights how local actions can resonate on a larger scale. He found that local activism is not just about protecting a specific place but about creating models of resistance and adaptation that can be replicated globally. And documenting that process definitely doesn't hurt!

Educational and Journalistic Content:

Try to combine educational tactics with journalistic integrity. When you use this approach, your stories will be more informative and more credible. Charlie believes that blending these elements helps build trust and authority, making it easier to influence public opinion and policy. He strives to present balanced stories that inform without just sensationalising, using storytelling techniques that have been used for ages.

Experience It Yourself:

There's no substitute for being on the ground. Experiencing the issues firsthand gives your storytelling authenticity and urgency. Charlie’s trip to the Amazon with Jungle Keepers, is a great example of this principle. We spoke about the impact of witnessing deforestation and illegal logging up close, experiences that stuck and deeply informed his storytelling and climate advocacy work.
